Library Policy
Recommended and required textbooks submitted on textbook adoption forms are purchased or licensed by the library when possible. Textbooks can be found by using the DMU Discovery search system, or by accessing the Course Reserves page under Find Resources or Students.
Electronic Access
While Library faculty and staff work hard to obtain electronic access to required and recommended materials, there are times when this is not possible. Some major textbook publishers have chosen not to provide electronic purchasing options for libraries. We recognize that their failure to provide electronic purchasing options to libraries deprives students who cannot afford a personal digital edition of the resource. This means that for courses that have adopted textbooks by these publishers, students who do not purchase the textbook will not have an electronic access option to textbook content.
To address this issue, we will work with instructors to explore and identify viable textbook alternatives. If you are interested in exploring alternative access options, would like support with sourcing alternative course materials or if you have questions about textbook availability, please reach out to Jill Edgerton (jill.edgerton@dmu.edu).
Counterfeit Textbooks
The library wishes to make employees aware that there has been a rise of counterfeit books appearing on online vendors. These can be in two forms:
1) Books with the correct cover, but not the right text inside
2) Books that have been created through generative AI
We counsel both employees and students to be aware of this issue, and choose online vendors carefully. Consider checking the reviews for the item in question, to be sure that others have received the correct material.
