Copyright at DMU: Home

Des Moines University's copyright policy, procedures for documenting fair use, and other helpful resources

Copyright and DMU

As an institution of higher learning and as part of the worldwide community of scholars, Des Moines University is committed to respect for intellectual property rights, the appropriate use of copyrighted materials, and compliance with current copyright law.   To help the DMU community think through and work through questions surrounding copyright, an updated copyright compliance policy  and other guideline documents have been created, as well as a fair use checklist that can be used to help make decisions around a specific copyright question. Links to the policy and checklist can be found below.

Copyright can often times seem confusing and a little scary.  However, having a good grasp of DMU's copyright policy and guidelines , always working through the fair use checklist, and accepting that copyright involves reasoned choices rather than cut and dried numbers will keep you on track.  Above all, remember to put yourself in the copyright holders shoes:  what would you want others to do if they were using your materials?
