Calling all crossword puzzle lovers!

We are celebrating National Crossword Puzzle Day with a crossword puzzle about DMU Library resources. Test your library knowledge and complete our puzzle. Take a picture/screenshot of your completed puzzle and submit it via our form to be entered into a drawing for a cozy winter prize! 

There are paper copies of the puzzle and an online link of the puzzle available for you to solve, so pick the one you like best and put on your puzzle-solving hat. All answers can be found on the library website! 

While our puzzle is a bit tricky, it does follow the modern day format of a crossword. Back in 1913 when the crossword was first published in the New York World, the design included no black squares and the puzzle was shaped like a diamond. Arthur Wynne developed the puzzle for the paper and it quickly took off as a new favorite past time. You can try your hand at Wynne's puzzle and read more about it in the Mental Floss article here.

Don't forget to try out our library crossword and enter a picture of your puzzle for a chance to win a prize! You can access the puzzle and submit your picture on our guide page. The contest is open from December 17-27th.

Looking for a film for your club, class, or lecture? Want a film to watch with friends? 

The Library has free films for you to watch. Choose from a variety of thousands of films from our two free databases, Kanopy and Academic Video Online (AVON).

Kanopy

Kanopy has documentaries and award winning films. The collection includes categories of Film Noir, Italian Cinema, Gender Studies, Political Science, Technology, Human Rights, Science and Engineering, Environmental Science, Media Studies, British Television from BBC, Anime, World Cinema, Asian Cinema, Black Cinema, LGTBQ+ Cinema, and Films directed by Women.

The Library is now offering a citation reviews service! 

If you need your citations reviewed before you turn in a paper, we can offer feedback to you. We have specific parameters in order to use our service and require that you give us several days before the due date to take a look at your citations. However, we are happy to assist you and are excited to offer this new service.

Did you know? 

The DMU Library has board games such as Pandemic, Connect 4, Codenames, and Virulence. If you are looking for a game to play with friends and family over the holiday break, why not borrow one from the library? Or if you have been eyeballing that game, but don't know if you will like it, you can test it out by borrowing it from the library. In October 2024, DMU Library hosted our first MisinfoDay@DMU in partnership with the University of Washington and the Center for an Informed Public. We hosted two events and worked with the University of Washington to adapt their program to work for our graduate students. 

The panel event included three different faculty speakers who spoke on misinformation and how it shows up in the medical field, around immigration, and in our lives. There was a lot of interest and excitement around this topic, and attendees requested more time for questions and discussion next year.

The escape room event centered on a story-line about a health supplement being released into a water supply and asked participants to determine if the health supplement was safe and if the source was trustworthy. Students had a fun time solving puzzles, which included identifying AI images and deepfakes. 

Both events created great conversations around how to identify and debunk misinformation in personal and professional settings.
